While it's possible to create a more welcoming home by renovating or painting, it's the items you put in your home that give it a personal touch.
According to the Living at Home Report 2022, 42% of people said personal belongings make their home reflect their personality.
But there is a downside to keeping all of your beloved items.
Whether it's a lack of space or feeling unclean and unorganized, we can all be burdened by too many items.
How do you organize your belongings?
Interior design expert Chiara Effroi Lutteri is familiar with this situation and has helped many clients find inspiration to redesign and reorganize their homes to better meet their needs.
She says that storage solutions should be designed to be practical, aesthetically pleasing, and fit your lifestyle.
People tend to stow away all sorts of items because that's what they think a tidy home should look like.
But the right storage solution should also allow you to display your prized possessions. The number of items to display naturally varies according to your individual personality.
How do we start organizing?
Chiara says, "Start with a small area and set a goal that feels achievable. You can divide organizing that small area into smaller steps."
Focus on one small task or place, and you'll get a happy sense of accomplishment when it's done.
Remember not to try to do a lot, as you may get lost in the process and forget what you need to do next.
Tips for organizing your belongings at home:
1. factor in unexpected storage space
Look for what makes your home look unique. High ceilings? Consider vertical storage cabinets.
Even the ceiling itself can be used for storage. Hard to utilize corner? Turn it into a storage and display area.
2. Stay calm and classify your belongings
Whether it's travel souvenirs, family photos, or small decorative items in your home, these items can look (and become) cluttered if they're scattered in different rooms.
But instead of throwing them all away, turn them into collectibles. This approach works for any number of items you own in large quantities.
The practice of categorizing keeps these items from looking cluttered. Plus, by keeping similar items together, it's easier for you to know which ones are too much or which ones can be thrown away.
3. Make organizing fun
You may find the task too daunting while doing it, and for most people, there is a huge sense of relief once it's done.
So why not have an organizing party?
Make plans for your roommate or family member for the day (or evening), and once you have a common understanding of what you want to achieve, the party can begin.
Music and snacks help bring everyone in the house together and get things done with a positive mindset.
