Have you ever imagined hiking through rugged peaks, endless green valleys, and tranquil alpine meadows?
We’re heading to the Carpathian Mountains for an unforgettable hiking experience. Grab your boots, Lykkers, because we're about to explore one of Europe’s wildest and most scenic landscapes together!
Exploring the Majestic Bucegi Mountains
Our journey started in Romania’s Bucegi Mountains, part of the Carpathian range, where we encountered some of the most stunning views we’ve ever seen. We hiked up to the famous Sphinx and Babele rock formations, two incredible natural landmarks shaped by wind and time. The hike to these landmarks took us through lush forests and open fields with panoramic views of the valleys below. When we reached the top, standing beside these ancient formations, it felt like we were on top of the world!
If you’re heading to the Bucegi Mountains, the easiest way to reach the Sphinx and Babele is by taking the cable car from Bușteni. The cable car operates from 8 AM to 4 PM, and tickets are around 80 RON round-trip. But for those feeling more adventurous, hiking up is also a popular option!
The Wild Beauty of the Retezat National Park
Next, we trekked into Retezat National Park, known for its wild and rugged beauty. This is the perfect destination for those who love untouched nature. We found ourselves surrounded by over 80 glacial lakes, the most famous being Lake Bucura, the largest in Romania. Imagine hiking alongside crystal-clear lakes, with towering mountain peaks reflected in the water. It was pure magic!
Camping near Lake Bucura was an incredible experience, as we spent the night under a blanket of stars. The park is open year-round, but the best time to visit is from May to October. There’s no entrance fee, but we recommend bringing your own camping gear if you plan on staying overnight.
The Scenic Transfăgărășan Highway
No Carpathian adventure is complete without driving or hiking along the legendary Transfăgărășan Highway. We were lucky enough to experience it, and let us tell you, Lykkers, the views are mind-blowing! Winding roads, towering cliffs, and stunning alpine scenery made it one of the most scenic routes we’ve ever explored. We stopped at Balea Lake, a beautiful glacial lake surrounded by peaks. Here, we took a break, enjoyed the fresh air, and had a picnic right by the water.
The highway is open from June to October due to snow, and no entrance fees are required. If you're driving, be sure to take your time to fully enjoy the breathtaking views.
Practical Tips for Your Carpathian Adventure
Here’s what we learned that might help you plan your hike: Always check the weather forecast before heading out, as mountain weather can change quickly. Make sure to wear proper hiking gear, especially sturdy boots, since the trails can get rocky and steep in some areas. It’s also a good idea to bring plenty of water and snacks, as facilities are limited in the more remote parts of the mountains.
We suggest visiting between May and October for the best hiking conditions. Some trails can be challenging, so make sure to choose the right one for your fitness level. Oh, and don't forget your camera! Every corner of the Carpathians offers a picture-perfect view.
