Sveti Stefan, a tiny island along Montenegro’s Adriatic coast, has transformed from a humble fishing village to an exclusive luxury destination. Its rich history began in the 15th century when local families turned the island into a fortress to protect against invasions.
Later, Sveti Stefan evolved into a vital trading center under Venetian rule. By the mid-20th century, however, the population had dwindled to just 20 residents, leading to a major transformation in 1954 when the Yugoslav government decided to convert the island into a resort.

How To Get There

Sveti Stefan is located about 8 km south of Budva, making it easily accessible from major towns on Montenegro’s coast. If you’re in Budva, you can take a bus for just €2, and the journey lasts around 30 minutes. Alternatively, you can walk the 10 km coastal route, which takes you through breathtaking scenery. From Tivat Airport, you can reach Sveti Stefan by taxi or private transfer in about 40 minutes.

The Resort

Today, Sveti Stefan is one of the most sought-after luxury destinations in the world, famous for hosting international celebrities such as Marilyn Monroe, Sophia Loren, and Claudia Schiffer. The island’s transformation was completed in 2009 under Aman Resorts, which now manages the exclusive Aman Sveti Stefan Hotel. While the island is closed to the general public, guests at the resort can enjoy the unique experience of staying in restored stone houses that retain their historical charm.

What To Do

If you're lucky enough to stay at Aman Sveti Stefan, you’ll have access to private beaches, luxurious spas, and gourmet dining. The island's narrow streets, ancient buildings, and well-preserved architecture invite exploration.

Surroundings

If you’re not staying at the resort, you can still enjoy the beauty of the surrounding area. A stroll through the lush Miločer Park, once the summer residence of Montenegro’s royal family, offers breathtaking views of the coast and is filled with exotic plants, olive groves, and trails leading to King’s Beach and Queen’s Beach, which provide excellent spots to unwind.

Accomodation

Although staying at the resort is pricey - rooms start at around €800 per night - there are more affordable accommodations nearby with spectacular views of the island. Budva and Becici offer a range of accommodations, from budget-friendly apartments to mid-range hotels with stunning sea views. These options allow you to enjoy the beauty of Sveti Stefan without the hefty price tag.
Sveti Stefan offers a dream escape rich in culture and natural beauty, ideal for a luxury escape during the year.
